How your GLH can be split
Did you know that your students' guided learning hours (GLH) can be split a number of ways?
The Educational Funding Agency (EFA) has set the full-time funding for 16-19 at the equivalent of 600 hours per year (1200 hours over the duration of a two-year A-level course). For funding purposes, one AS or one A2 is equivalent to 150 guided learning hours. So, what this means for schools is that students can study four AS levels in Year 12, and three A2 levels in Year 13, with some additional funded hours for 'non-qualification' activities or qualifications such as the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which prepares students for university or their future career.
There is flexibility in the allocation of hours over a two-year course. For example, a student could do 660 hours in Year 12 (four AS plus 60 hours) and 540 hours in Year 13 (three A2 plus 90 hours), which would mean slightly more additional non-qualification activities in year two, while meeting the overall total of 1200 hours.
Please remember that students who do not hold an A*-C grade in their GCSEs in English and mathematics are expected to include them as part of their study programme.
For more information about eligibility or how your students can use their hours, please read the EFA's Funding guidance for young people 2013/14.
